Tour de Presteigne & Green Wheels 2009

The UK's Premier Electric Bike Rally

About:

 What is it?

The Tour de Presteigne and Green Wheels is the UK's premier and most exciting electric and alternative bike race and meeting - Now in it's fourth year and growing in popularity!

Why?

Carbon dioxide emissions from transport have risen throughout the 1990s and now account for around one quarter of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions. These emissions contribute to climate change that has grave domestic and global consequences.

What can we do about it?
There are lots of options we can consider and lots of technologies already in place or on the horizon to help us. These options include more walking, cycling, using public transport, joining car sharing or lift sharing schemes, avoiding use of aeroplanes and using low emissions vehicles.

The Tour de Presteigne and Green Wheels Transport Show aims to present some of the options available to the public to inspect and, in some cases, to try out. These include:

  • Cycles – Recumbent bicycles, tricycles and velomobiles.
  • Electric cycles. Experiencing is believing – try them out!
  • Electric scooters and motorcycles
  • Electric cars and vans
  • Low emissions petrol and diesel cars. The average new car emits about 170 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre (g/ km). We are showing cars with official emissions figures of up to 120g/ km (road tax currently £35/ year, declining to £20/year in future) and some with as low as 99g/ km (which means zero road tax).
  • Hybrid electric cars – much lower emissions than conventional petrol cars
    (under 120 g/km).
  • Diesel motorbikes - These have been invited.
  • A hydrogen fuel cell car from a well known manufacturer has been invited!

Are electric vehicles and cycles green?

They have no emissions from their exhaust pipes – they have none. They can be re-charged from “green” electricity, which can be obtained by switching electricity supplier or by installing renewable electricity generation such as that provided by solar electric (PV) panels. Wind and Sun will be demonstrating these technologies at the show.

"The Green Agenda is often wrongly interpreted as being mainly negative, about having less & paying more. However - lower congestion, reduced pollution, stronger communities, warmer homes, lower bills, healthier food & more durable products - could all be part of a low carbon & more resource efficient future."

Tony Juniper
